Preview: Reims vs Paris Saint-Germain – prediction, team news, lineups

Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain will look to maintain their perfect start to the new campaign when they travel to Reims on Sunday night.

Recent reports have claimed that Lionel Messi’s summer signing will make his long-awaited debut for the Paris team at Stade Auguste-Delaune II.

Match preview

PSG continued their strong start in Ligue 1 and followed their 4-2 win at home to Strasbourg with an away win by the same score in Brest last weekend.

Ander Herrera, Idrissa Gueye, and Angel Di Maria got their names on the record, as did Kylian Mbappé, who may have played his last game for the club as his dream move to Real Madrid draws ever closer.

Mauricio Pochettino will be delighted with the way his team has started the new campaign, especially without South American superstars Neymar and Messi, who have been watching from the stands. Both players, however, are training with the first team and are in contention to play this weekend.

With their main rivals in Lille, Lyon, and Monaco already showing signs of weakness, PSG are the firm favorites to claim their crown as the best in France.

Pochettino’s men are currently at the top of the table in goal difference with the most points in their three games, scoring 10 goals in the process.

The Parisian side is expected to score a large number of goals again this weekend against Reims, against whom he has scored exactly four goals in three of his last six league games.

PSG are undefeated in their last 10 Ligue 1 away games, winning nine times in the process, their longest period without a loss in the top flight since a 17 streak between February 2018 and January 2019.

Success is expected on Sunday for Pochettino and company, although Messi’s possible appearance will overshadow any claimed result at Stade Auguste-Delaune II.

After losing two of their first three Ligue 1 games last season, Reims have started the 2021-22 campaign undefeated, albeit with three consecutive draws.

A goalless draw on opening day against Nice and an entertaining 3-3 draw at home to Montpellier were followed by last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Metz.

Marshall Munetsi headed in for the first goal in the seventh minute, however, he was quickly disallowed by a brilliant 25-yard shot from Metz midfielder Habib Maiga in the 14th minute.

Both sides were eventually forced to share the spoils, extending Reims’ unwanted winless league run to 11 matches. This poor record is his longest streak since he went 15 games without a win between October 2012 and February 2013.

Oscar Garcia is now preparing his team for a disappointing match against PSG, a team he has lost in each of their last three meetings 9-0 on aggregate.

Reims is also heading into Sunday’s clash with a poor home record as they failed to win any of their last 10 Ligue 1 matches at Stade Auguste-Delaune II.

A surprise win against PSG would see them claim their first win since March, as well as their first home win since January.
