It certainly wasn’t nice, but the US women’s basketball team took on their first Olympic opponent.
Team USA fell behind against Nigeria in the first half of Tuesday’s group game, but the Americans took it away with an 81-72 win, increasing their Olympic streak to 50 games in a row. Despite a smaller than expected victory margin, Sue Bird, Team USA guard, was encouraged by the performance.
“I think the best thing about this game for us is that we calmed down from room one to second,” said Bird. “There was a small adjustment. We calmed down and could play our game.”
Next up for Team USA is a showdown with Japan, who beat France with a solid performance from the three-point line in their first Olympic game. Japan made five of its eleven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and shot more than 40 percent off the curve.
“I love the way Japan plays,” said Team USA guard Diana Taurasi. “Just when you think you’ve got it all, there’s another three-point shooter, so we have a lot of work to do.”
